This week Year One have been authors. We have been busy writing a piece of information text about trees in different seasons.
We thought about the size of our tree, what type of tree it was and which season to describe.
We had to include the correct punctuation, including capital letters, full stops and question marks.
We also used ambitious adjectives to describe the size and strength of our tree. We had challenges to include the suffix- 'ing' in our verbs.
Our audience were Dragonflies and Butterflies- who were excellent listeners.

Y1 have been inspired in Art with our 'Playful Making' project.
We have explored a variety of materials and looked at sculptures both small and large. The children have loved experimenting with various materials, which has been built on from our previous DT work and science. We know all about materials that are absorbent or transparent and we can describe their properties.
We have playfully made our own small sculptures just for fun, without designing them first.

We are now building on our skills to design and make boats that float. We are busy collecting recycling materials to use. Can you make a boat at home that floats? What is it made out of? Take a photo

This week in science we have been exploring materials. We can identify and name a variety of everyday materials including wood, plastic, glass, metal, water and rock. We can distinguish between objects and the material from which it is made. We have also tried really hard to describe the simple properties of a variety of everyday materials: such as- Glass- Glass is transparent, hard, rigid and smooth etc.

Have a go at home and go on a material hunt- What material do you see the most of? Why do you think that is?
What would happen if the wooden spoon was made out of glass? Could it be made out of any other material e.g. metal? What happens if the metal keys were made out of fabric? What happens if the glass was made out of brick? Can you make up some 'What ifs' on your own.
Have fun on your material hunt,

This week in Year 1 we have started Multiplication in Maths. We have counted in 2s and 10s and began to use an array to represent this. We have focused on the following key stem sentences.
Can you see if you can count objects at home in multiples of 2 and 10? Next week we will be counting in 5s and recognising equal groups.

This week in Year 1 we have had so much fun using water play to learn all about capacity and volume! We have learnt that capacity is the maximum amount that a container can hold and the volume is the amount of water within the container. We have compared the capacity of different containers and used the words 'full', 'half full' and 'empty' to describe volume. See if you can have a go at comparing capacity and volume at home over the holidays!

What a wonderful day Year 1 have had at the Honey Farm! We tasted honey, rolled our own beeswax candles, planted sunflowers, dressed up as bees and even had a tractor ride! We couldn't be more proud of the children for being so well behaved and joining in with every activity.
We learnt all about the different roles of bees within the hive and how honey is made. We also discovered different varieties of honey and how these are made.
Next week we will be writing about our experience in the recount.

This week in Year 1 we have worked really hard on our independent writing in English. We have tried so hard to remember full stops, capital letters and finger spaces, as well as using the handwriting lines to write on the line. The children have based their story on Little Red Riding Hood but changed the setting and key characters.
In Maths we have started our new unit on Length and Height. We have been working practically to compare objects in the classroom using the words 'longer', 'shorter' and 'taller'. Can you see if you can compare objects at home?

In Year One we have done some great reading and phonics this week, using the sounds:
Please find the videos following the links: er/ ow/ ai. Please also practise the red words- their, were and who.

We are reading an exciting new book to help us with our English letter writing. Grandma Bird by Benji Davies. Grandma is very adventurous and Noi, her Grandson loves visiting her.

We are well underway with our rehearsals, and we appreciate you practising your child's lines at home with them.
In maths we have been subtracting up to 10 by- crossing out, removing objects and using a number line.
Thank you for all of your help with our history unit. Your information about toys and sharing your toys with us was really helpful. We have historical evidence!

W/B 11th November 2024
We've had a great week so far in Y1. We have been scientists in our forest school area, we have collected leaves and predicted what colours are hiding inside. We have asked the question- Why do leaves fall off trees?
We are really excited by our History learning; we are finding out about- My Family History - What are changes within living memory? We have already thought about sequencing our day and we may need some help from Grandparents and Parents about what toys you played with when you were little.
Our English journey with Wombat continues. Yesterday we pretended to be Wombat helping save his friends from the bush fire, he dug a really deep hole and everyone was safe.

We are getting really good at solving addition problems up to 10. We know how to count on, use our fingers, use counters or blocks and we use our number bonds that we have been practising.
Our phonics sounds are:
i-e, o-e and u-e . Our red words are- saw, was and old.
Follow the links to see our videos.

In Phonics, we have started learning the letter sounds from set 3- ea, oi and a-e. Please follow the links to view the videos at home. ea oi a-e
In maths we are learning our number bonds to 10. We have also been adding numbers together using the part whole model and then putting it into context by making up a number story.
Our science learning is all about the seasons. Our assessment activity was to pack a suitcase to go on a summer holiday. Our focus will be Autumn and investigating why do the leaves fall off some trees?
Our English writing is based on the book Wombat goes walkabout by Michael Morpurgo. We had a fantastic experience day learning all about Australian animals.

W/B 21st October 2024
This week in English we have looked at wheeled toys. The children thought of as many wheeled toys as possible, before looking at examples of wheeled toys in the past. We discussed the similarities and differences between them, before experiencing playing with wheeled toys to gather vocabulary! What wheeled toys can you find at home?

This week in Year 1 we have looked at part-whole models in preparation for our learning about addition in Maths. The children have used different resources to represent the parts coming together to make a whole. We have even learnt actions to support our understanding! Over the next few weeks we will begin to use the mathematical symbols '+' and '=' to write number sentences.

This week in Year 1 we have had our first of three cricket mornings! The children impressed us so much with their enthusiasm and behaviour. They took part in a range of activities, using the bats to practise their hitting and balls to practise their catching. We are looking forward to seeing the progress in their cricket skills over the next few weeks.
So far in Phonics, we have learnt the following sounds:

This week in Year 1 we had a wonderful visit from Duncan Beedie, author of 'Heavy Metal Badger'. The children loved listening to him tell the story and discuss where the idea of the book came from. They joined in with a 'draw-along' in which they drew the main character and were even lucky enough to take their own copy home!

This week in Science we have spoken about the germination process of seeds. We listened to the story 'Jack and the beanstalk' and even planted our own runner beans! The children identified what plants need to grow: sunlight, water and nutrients from soil. In groups, they then planted some runner beans which are now on our classroom window sill.
The children made predictions about how well the seeds will grow using a paper towel, as opposed to soil! We are looking forward to seeing the first root emerge from the seeds!
In Phonics, we have learnt the sounds ow, oo and oo. Please see the following links:

This week in Year 1 we have been very busy starting our new topic in English based on the book 'The Train Ride'. We are so proud of the children for being such Persevering Petes and trying their best to write on the lines. We have really focused on using a full stop, capital letter and finger spaces in our simple sentences.
In Maths this week, we have looked at counting up to 10 and making sure we touch each object so we don't count too many! We have sorted objects into different groups based on colour, shape and size, as well as counting from a larger group. The children have shown a Curious Connie attitude by asking questions which has been great!
The children used the following stem sentences to explain their learning:
'This set of objects has been sorted by...'
'I could also sort the objects by...'
'...does belong in this set because.'
'...does not belong in this set because.'
In Phonics this week we have learnt the sounds ay, ee and igh. Please use the links below to practise these sounds - It will really help your child in school. Thank you!
