What does it mean in practice? In summary, a mastery approach…
-
Puts numbers first: Our approach has numbers at their heart, because we believe confidence with numbers is the first step to competency in the curriculum as a whole.
-
Puts depth before breadth: we reinforce knowledge again and again.
-
Encourages collaboration: children can progress through the schemes as a group, supporting each other as they learn.
-
Focuses on fluency, reasoning and problem solving: it gives children the skills they need to become competent mathematicians.

At the heart of our mastery approach is the Concrete Pictorial Abstract (CPA) approach. Research shows that when children are introduced to a new concept, working with concrete physical resources and pictorial representations leads to a better understanding of abstract concepts. We use CPA throughout our in school.

We teach maths through our school values:

-
Respect – We listen to each other’s ideas, work together, and understand that everyone learns at their own pace.
-
Responsibility – We take care with our work, try our best, and take charge of our own learning by asking questions and practising regularly.
-
Collaboration - Pupils work together to explore mathematical concepts, share strategies, and support each other in achieving goals.
-
Curiosity - We encourage inquisitive minds to ask questions, explore patterns, and seek deeper understanding of the real world through maths
-
Positivity – We believe that everyone can improve in maths. We celebrate effort, enjoy learning from mistakes, and always try to have a “can-do” attitude and growth mindset.
-
Perseverance – We know that maths can be challenging sometimes, but we don’t give up. We keep trying, use different strategies, and learn from each challenge.
-
Ambition – We aim high and challenge ourselves to go further. We are proud of our progress and always look for ways to improve.
-
Aspiration – We learn how maths is used in real life and in exciting jobs. We dream big and know that maths can help us achieve our goals in the future.

Our maths lessons are fun, practical, and full of opportunities to explore, reason, and explain. We want every child to leave primary school feeling confident, capable, and ready to use maths in the wider world.
