This week in our English lessons, Foxes have been recapping subordinate clauses and relative clauses, reinforcing our understanding of these essential components of sentence structure. Additionally, we have revisited previous learning to ensure a solid foundation in our grammatical skills. For further practice, students are encouraged to explore the following resource: BBC Bitesize - Subordinate and Relative Clauses.

In Science, our focus has been on the Earth, examining the evidence that supports its spherical shape. We have also explored the movements of the Earth around the sun and the moon’s orbit around the Earth, enhancing our understanding of celestial mechanics.

In History, we have continued our study of the Romans, particularly how their beliefs evolved over time and the significant inventions they introduced, many of which continue to influence our lives today. This exploration not only highlights the impact of Roman culture but also encourages them to draw connections between historical developments and modern society.

This week in Foxes, in English, the students have commenced an exploration of playscripts, with a particular focus on William Shakespeare’s renowned work, The Tempest. This unit has provided an invaluable opportunity for learners to engage with Shakespearean language, as they have been tasked with converting the text into contemporary vernacular. This exercise not only enhances their understanding of the narrative and characters but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the linguistic artistry of Shakespeare. We are also using some small clips to aid our understanding: KS2 English - The Tempest - BBC Teach

In mathematics, the curriculum has shifted towards the study of fractions. Students are currently learning to identify, compare, and manipulate fractions, which are fundamental concepts in the broader field of mathematics. This topic is essential as it lays the groundwork for more complex mathematical operations and problem-solving skills. The integration of practical examples and visual aids will support students in grasping these concepts effectively. This week in the Foxes class, we have embraced our culinary skills by baking some delightful biscuits, including vanilla, ginger, and gluten-free options. The children thoroughly enjoyed the process of mixing, rolling and cutting the dough. It was a wonderful opportunity to foster teamwork and creativity, although we identified that the gluten-free biscuits could use some improvement for next time. We look forward to refining the recipe and ensuring that everyone can enjoy our tasty treats.

In addition to our baking adventures, we have successfully completed our non-chronological reports on either Space or Our Planet. The students demonstrated remarkable enthusiasm and creativity in their writing, incorporating some astonishing facts about their chosen topics. Their use of paragraphs and subheadings illustrated a clear understanding of how to organise information effectively, which I commend.

In mathematics, we have been focusing on the concepts of multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, and 1000. The class has shown great progress in grasping these essential skills, and I am pleased to see them applying their knowledge to solve a variety of practical problems. Overall, it has been a productive week, filled with learning and fun.

This week in Foxes, we have enthusiastically embarked on our new History topic, focusing on the Romans. The children have begun exploring timelines and reflecting on what they already know about this fascinating period. It has been wonderful to see their curiosity spark as they engage with the material, and we look forward to deepening their understanding of Roman history throughout the coming weeks.

In addition, we are thrilled to introduce our new Design Technology topic centred around festive biscuits. As part of our preparations, we have been discussing the ingredients commonly found in Christmas biscuit recipes. The children are eager to experiment with various recipes and discover which flavours and textures they prefer. We anticipate that this project will not only hone their practical skills but also promote collaboration and creativity as they work together in the kitchen.

This week, the Foxes group has immersed itself in the fascinating world of science through an engaging experiment that involved vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, and balloons. The children combined these two common household ingredients to create a chemical reaction that produced carbon dioxide gas, causing the balloons to inflate. This hands-on activity not only demonstrated basic principles of chemistry but also allowed the children to observe the reactions in real-time, enhancing their understanding of gas production and properties. Foxes competed in an inter school cross country event on Wednesday. Everyone completed the course with some amazing results. It was also great to see the positive and supportive attitude of the class as they cheered each other on. Well done to all Foxes – you made us very proud.

We have been looking at typography in art. Over the last couple of weeks, we have designed our own maps, and then this week, we have made them 3D.

In maths we have been rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,00 and even 100,000! Some of the children have thought of their own raps to help remind them how to round. Rounding numbers- BBC Bitesize
